Emissions of atmospherically reactive gases nitrous acid and nitric oxide from Arctic permafrost peatlands

چکیده
Abstract Soils are important sources of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous acid (HONO) in the atmosphere. These nitrogen (N)-containing gases play a crucial role atmospheric chemistry climate at different scales because reactions modulated by NO hydroxyl radicals (OH), which formed via HONO photolysis. Northern permafrost soils have so far remained unexplored for emissions despite their high N stocks, capacity to emit (N 2 O), enhancing mineral turnover due warming thawing. Here, we report first from high-latitude based on measurements permafrost-affected subarctic peatlands. We show large (0.1–2.4 µ g m −2 h −1 ) (0.4–59.3 unvegetated peat surfaces, rich with N, compared low (⩽0.2 both gases) adjacent vegetated surfaces (experiments intact cores). observed production under highly variable soil moisture conditions dry wet. However, complementary slurry experiments, was strongly favored anoxic conditions. suggest urgent examination other Arctic landscapes better constrain these reactive chemistry.

Increased nitrous oxide emissions from Arctic peatlands after permafrost thaw.
Permafrost in the Arctic is thawing, exposing large carbon and nitrogen stocks for decomposition. Gaseous carbon release from Arctic soils due to permafrost thawing is known to be substantial, but growing evidence suggests that Arctic soils may also be relevant sources of nitrous oxide (N2O). Here we show that N2O emissions from subarctic peatlands increase as the permafrost thaws. In our study...

متن کاملNitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment processes.
Nitrous oxide (N(2)O) emissions from wastewater treatment plants vary substantially between plants, ranging from negligible to substantial (a few per cent of the total nitrogen load), probably because of different designs and operational conditions. In general, plants that achieve high levels of nitrogen removal emit less N(2)O, indicating that no compromise is required between high water quali...

متن کاملNitrous oxide emissions from tropical hydroelectric reservoirs
[1] We report original data on nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from two tropical reservoirs, their rivers below the dam, and from natural aquatic ecosystems and rainforest soils in French Guiana and Panama. We also review published N2O fluxes from other tropical reservoirs and natural environments. We show that: (1) N2O emissions from tropical reservoirs occur mainly at the reservoir surface, fluxes...
